Os Meninos do Coro da Sé de Lisboa e a sua organização até à Revolução liberal de 1834
Abstract
The Cathedral of Lisbon holds a school of music where fourteen choir boys receive a musical and liturgical training resolutely oriented towards apprenticeship of future church musicians or ecclesiastics. The most important decisions are taken by the Cardinal Patriarch and severely applied by the Church President and Wardon. The choir boys have a Grammar and Latin Master, a Music Master and must, when in duty, obey the Ceremony Master and the Chapel Master. They are day-scholars, living in the vicinity, and receive a remuneration for the services rendered when they are effective. Their degree of seniority determines their rights and prerogatives. Voice change does not constitute a reason for dismissal. They are granted indemnities in case of sickness, and substantial subsidies when they want to integrate the Church. This school serves as a trampolino for the social and artistic promotion of those youngsters.
